Dreaming of Buying a Home?
Has home ownership been put on the back burner because you’re not sure you can qualify for a mortgage?
Follow these steps to your new home:
Save a larger down payment
You should be prepared to put down at least 10% - 20%. If you have a lower credit score, expect to make a larger down payment.
Strengthen income and employment history
If your income has decreased, or been sporadic over the last couple of years, wait a while and build up a history of steady employment. It is recommended that you maintain at least 24 months of continuous employment. That, plus the cash you can save in the meantime, will move you toward securing a mortgage.
Find the right lender
Many people give up trying to get a mortgage once they have been turned down. Look for a high-quality lender who will work with you to find the right loan for your situation—like Kentucky Telco.

Goodwill Cars to Work℠
Goodwill Cars to Work℠ is an effort to provide affordable options for people who face transportation challenges in getting to work. Especially in rural areas, transportation is among the top three barriers to finding and maintaining employment, alongside childcare and lack of training. Seeing an opportunity to make a significant impact on this population, Goodwill Industries of Kentucky created Cars to Work. With the assistance of Representative Jimmie Lee (D-Elizabethtown) and Senator Dan Seum (R-Louisville), and the support of automobile dealers across the state, Kentucky’s Goodwill was granted a nonprofit auto dealer’s license to establish the program. Cars to Work helps people with disabilities or other disadvantages obtain affordable, dependable transportation to achieve and maintain employment and improve their quality of life. While Cars to Work vehicles are not available to the general public, individuals interested in obtaining a vehicle from Cars to Work may qualify by being referred to the program by a nonprofit social service provider or governmental agency. The agency case worker and Cars to Work personnel will collaborate to assist the potential buyer with obtaining a no-interest loan on a vehicle that is covered by a warranty for major repairs throughout the loan’s duration.
For more information about the Cars to Work program, or if you would like information about donating a car, please click here or call (270) 735-1430.
Kentucky Telco Federal Credit Union is a proud partner of Goodwill Cars to Work℠
As a result of a recent court settlement between retail merchants and the credit card industry, merchants can now pass along their payment processing costs to consumers who pay with a credit card.
How it works:
- Surcharges can be imposed on commercial and consumer credit card transactions only, not on purchases made with debit cards or prepaid cards.
- Merchants must disclose the credit card surcharge clearly, at the store entrance and the point of sale and/or on the homepage if the merchant does business on the Internet.
- The disclosure must include the amount of the surcharge, the fact that the fee is being charged by the merchant, and that the fee does not exceed the merchant’s cost to accept credit cards.
This is not a charge from Kentucky Telco.
